A three-storey private residence in Nicon Town, Lagos: whole-villa lighting and shading, a dedicated home cinema, multi-room and outdoor audio, biometric and video access control, and battery-backed power resilience, coordinated from one Control4 backbone
This three-level family home was planned floor by floor. The Ground Floor is for guests, meals and the pool, with two staff rooms alongside. The First Floor holds a gym, a home cinema, a prayer room, a family lounge and three bedrooms, one of them a nursery. The top floor is given entirely to the Master Suite, with an open sun deck on either side.
The challenge was to run lighting, blinds, music and security the same way on all three floors, while letting each room keep its own mood, from a busy kitchen to a quiet prayer room.
We created one system for the whole house, with each floor set up for the way that floor is used.
Whether you are in the Master Bedroom or one of the staff rooms by the pool, the interaction is the same: a keypad on the wall or a small handheld remote, with the lighting and blinds already set for that room.
Music plays through ceiling speakers in almost every main room and out around the pool. Smoke and heat detectors cover every room on every floor, including the staff quarters, and the cameras, door phones and alarm are all monitored from one central point.
The Home Cinema sits on the First Floor, in the middle of the house rather than beside the entertaining rooms downstairs. It has its own sound system and projector, separate from the music in the rest of the house, so the family can watch a film at full volume while the other floors carry on as normal.
The Master Suite takes up the whole top floor, with his and her closets, a master bathroom and a sun deck at the front and back. One keypad press moves the entire suite from its daytime setting to its evening one.
We left out speakers and screens entirely and gave the room one soft lighting scene, so it stays calm and uncluttered even with the gym next door and the cinema a few doors down. The Gym beside it was given the same attention, with its own brighter lighting and its own controls, so the two rooms can be used at the same time without one getting in the way of the other.
